Research Contribution This multi-media creative project used the combination of image and live music performance to explore contemporary resonances of Buxtehude's cantata cycle Membra Jesu Nostri--a historical text that explores Christian religious belief and its relationship to the concept of love. The visual imagery sought to illuminate all aspects of love that the cantatas address, from the Love-Thy-Neighbour variety to the starkly erotic. The photographs were taken in St. Marien Lubeck (the church were Buxtehude worked as an organist), and were juxtaposed against images drawn from the Balkan (depicting Roma people), Berlin and elsewhere. Research Significance The performances (4 in all) in St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne formed the opening event of the Melbourne International Festival in 2012, and were both well attended, and well-reviewed. The Age noted that ‘these Membra shine beacon-like in yet another bleakly populated landscape for serious music.’ They were also recorded by ABC Classic FM for delayed broadcast. | |
