Text on plaque reads: "This toposcope is the gift of the British South Africa Company to the City of Salisbury on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Cecil John Rhodes, founder of this colony, and is dedicated to the pioneers of Rhodesia. Unveiled 5th July 1953." Note that Rhodesia became Zimbabwe in April 1980. The city of Salisbury became Harare in April 1982.
