Abstract
The determinants of the British pay bargaining structure are of interest because of
increasing decentralisation in recent years, and because of the importance of the bargaining
structure for the general performance of the industrial relations system and other economic
phenomena. The paper uses a multinomial logit model to estimate the determinants of the
pay bargaining structure in Britain, using the 1984 Workplace Industrial Relations Survey.
The bargaining probability is estimated for multi-employer bargaining, organisation-level
bargaining and establishment-level bargaining. The findings support many commonly held
views about the determinants of the bargaining structure. However, an interesting result is
the insignificant effect of establishment size and trade union density on the choice of
bargaining level.
