Abstract

Precessions were measured of the 21+ states in Os192 and Pt198 in the enhanced transient field in thin cobalt foils and comparison made with similar recent studies of Os188 and Pt194 ions in Fe foils. It is concluded that (i) the transient field acting on Pt in Fe is singularly anomalous, and (ii) recent contention by Levy et al. that the g factors of even Pt 21+ states may be substantially lower than reported earlier cannot be sustained. NUCLEAR REACTIONS Os192(S32, S32′) Os192(21+), Os192(Ni58, Ni58′)- Os192(21+), Pt198(S32, S32′) Pt198(21+), Pt198(Ni58, Ni58′) Pt198(21+), ES=80 MeV, ENi=220 MeV, enriched targets; measured W(θ,H,T) in thin polarized Co. Deduced relative transient field strengths OsCo and PtCo, OsFe and PtFe for 1.5%<~vc<~3.9%, deduced g(21+) even Pt isotopes.
