Abstract

A new formalism for magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) is presented that is in many ways analogous to the Kirkwood-Kuhn coupled oscillator formalism for the circular dichroism arising from the coupling of electric dipole allowed transitions. The nature of the A-, B-, and C-terms that are usually used to interpret MCD spectra is more transparent with this formalism than with those in the literature. The paper concludes with a brief analysis of some literature examples.
