Abstract
Research and knowledge security are often in conflict. The former thrives on open and rigorous inquiry, public dissemination, and engagement, and the latter demands sensitivity and safeguarding. The increasing adoption of AI in society and within universities further challenges this conflict as it introduces alternate mechanisms for acquiring, analysing, and communicating information and knowledge. Digital infrastructure is the backbone of our societies. Capabilities are essential for research and knowledge security and are operated by companies that have centralised power across the AI value chain. This chapter will explore the intersection of AI and power in the context of research and knowledge security. It examines how AI influences power dynamics in research and knowledge security and its safety implications. How we establish and maintain knowledge in society is of critical importance, and this paper offers insight into the implications of AI and power for this important endeavour.
