Abstract

This paper reviews the elements required to develop a life prediction methodology for metallic components in buildings. The state of knowledge with respect to the 'data' required for such models is outlined, with an emphasis on characterizing the service environment, the physical response of metals to the service environment, and the chemical and electrochemical response of the surface to its physical state. Gaps in the knowledge base are defined as are new trends in research and work required to fill such gaps. The state of models to predict service life is outlined, including established parametric models and the more recent process or state-based models.
