Cultural advice

The Australian National University acknowledges, celebrates and pays our respects to the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people of the Canberra region and to all First Nations Australians on whose traditional lands we meet and work, and whose cultures are among the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that ANU Library collections may include images, names, voices, and other representations of deceased persons.

Material in the collection may contain terms, language or views that reflect the period in which the item was created and may be considered inappropriate today.

Description

This work was first published in the journal Papers on Far Eastern History 11 (March 1975), at the Australian National University, pages 1 to 36. Though the essential material and argument of the article remains the same, I have made substantial adjustments and amendments, citing some publications since 1975 to supplement or replace the original references,* with additional footnotes and appropriate renumbering. .I have also added a note on The Date of the First Faction Incident.. Pagination of the original article is indicated in brackets [].
