Abstract

An optical vortex associated with a beam that carries a phase singularity on an electromagnetic field was discussed. It was shown that an optical vortex at the fundamental harmonic (FH) propagates through a 30-mm-long lithium triborate crystal generating a second-harmonic (SH) double-charge votex by means of a type I SH-generation (SHG) parametric process. At high intensity an effective self-defocusing SHG cascading process allows for the formation of a vortex soliton, which consists of two coupled fields propagating in the absence of diffraction.
