In the past, painted cinema billboards tied the experience of a movie to a particular cinema, relying on their shape, size, and content for maximum impact. In addition to providing a visual synopsis of a movie for local patrons, they augmented the experience of going to the cinema itself. This chapter provides a brief history of Korean cinema billboards, from their proliferation in the postwar period to their replacement in the 1990s.en
