Abstract
Synopsis: The results of fatigue tests on welded joints (plate to plate) with a thickness of 50 mm, in air and in sea water with cathodic protection, are presented. These results are compared with those obtained on samples of smaller thickness (32 mm) in order to assess the effect of the different weld profile and base plate thickness on the fatigue life of the testpieces. The analysis is also developed theoretically, using a two stage (initiation-propagation) mathematical model. A comparison is thus made between the experimentally assessed thickness effect and that obtained by Gurney’s method.
