A solar power sail mission for a Jovian Orbiter and Trojan Asteroid Flybys
Abstract
Here is shown the brand new hybrid solar sail study results performed at ISAS of JAXA, where the working group was established and has been investigating the application scientific missions for these three years. The concept is not only a passive photon propulsion that is a solar sail but also an advanced ultra high efficiency ion engines, both of which constitute a hybrid propulsion system that is conceived a useful way for medium to smaller interplanetary missions in future. The study results are summarized here and the significance of it is discussed in relation to the potential nuclear reactor power source.
