The important contributions made by Chile to science, both locally and globally, and in field of optics are presented. The research group of Mario Molina is a part of the recently established Center for Optics and Photonics (CEFOP), directed by Carlos Saavedra. The center is aimed to develop permanent collaborative research capabilities among its members. CEFOP provides environmental information such as sea-level temperature and chlorophyll concentration maps to fisheries and images of the forests that are used to prevent and monitor fires and gauge forest health. Researchers at CEFOP works on applied research in sensor-level processing that focuses on infrared focal-plane arrays with applications in color processing, flame and slurry analysis by spectroscopic methods, and the use of multispectral imaging for seafood inspection and processing. The members of CEFOP who belong to Molina's nonlinear optics group (NLOG) are focused on theoretical studies of discrete optical solitons in one dimension and two dimensions.en
