Abstract

This meeting is a celebration. In a very special sense it is a birthday celebration. Not of the Qur'an, for the Qur'an for Muslims is uncreated, but of the Muslim community which made its debut on the stage of world history in September 622 when Muhammad and his followers migrated >r from Mecca to Medina, and was welcomed there by a group of other communities as an arbiter and as a leader; an occasion so important, that almost immediately it was recognised as establishing Year One of a new, a Musiim era.

Description

"This volume represents a 'second edition' of the proceedings of the Conference. The first issue being marred by unforeseen technical problems ... It has not been possible to include Arabic script, and even diacritical marks, it has be necessary to add to the art-work by hand"--Preliminary note. "This modest volume represents a selection of the papers presented at the international conference 'The Qur'an through fourteen centuries" held at the Australian National University, Canberra, 8-13 May 1980 to celebrate the 14th centenary of the Muslim era ..."--Foreword. "Series 1."
