Abstract
The paper outlines how a multi-scale model of atmospheric corrosion can be developed that spans scales from 109 to 10-6 m and is capable not only of predicting the life of metal components subject to corrosive environments but can be used to design new treatments to protect metals. This model would be based on an established model that can actually predict the conditions at a metal surface. It will incorporate new developments of corrosion under a droplet and within a porous oxide. However new modules would have to be developed to define the distribution of droplets on a surface over time and to record how the nature of the surface, particularly oxide layers, changes with time. The paper outlines these developments and in doing so highlights factors controlling drop size on exposed plates and the role of oxides on zinc in controlling anodic and cathodic processes.
