Abstract

Results from fatigue tests on welded joints (plate to plate), of base plate thickness 50 mm, in air and in seawater with cathodic protection are presented. These results are compared with those previously derived under the same conditions on welds with base plate thickness 32 mm. The effect of the change in weld profile and base plate thickness are this assessed. The same effects are estimated theoretically using a two stage (initiation-propagation) fracture mechanics based model of fatigue life. A comparison is made between the experimentally determined thickness effect, the theoretically derived thickness effect and that would be obtained from the traditional relation of Gurney.
