Abstract
For much of the interwar period, the United States ran large current account surpluses. The world spoke of dollar shortage. In the past decade Japan has run large current account surpluses, but no one has spoken of ‘yen shortage’. This essay suggests two explanations. One is that the yen has not yet become a major international currency. The other is that Japan has financed its current account surpluses through capital outflow. Yen have not been short.
