Abstract

This paper presents a framework for driver-in-the-loop driver assistance systems. It is part of the "Smart Cars" project which is a joint project between the Australian National University, NICTA1 and CSIRO. The requirements on a driver assistance system (DAS) are discussed as well as desirable properties of the user interface. To demonstrate the framework, a complete system capable of reading speed signs in real-time, comparing the driver gaze, and providing immediate feedback to the driver if the sign has not been noted by the driver is presented and experimentally evaluated.
