Abstract
The paper is concerned with estimating probability models of
occupational attainment at initial and subsequent career points
for conncn individuals- It is innovative in two senses. First,
by relating subsequent occupations to those of first jobs we can,
in the context of multinomial logit specifications, establish
patterns of career paths. Our estimates reveal a high degree of
occupational mobility. Both initial education level and
additional education are important determinants of this mobility.
The paper also derives estimates from probability models which
take account of a ranking among occupations. These differ
substantially from those which eschew such a ranking and cast
doubt cxi the findings of much previous research.
