Edward Freeman

Dr Edward (Ted) Freeman OAM is an Australian doctor. As a medical missionary, he served as the superintendent at the Paton Memorial Hospital in the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) from 1963-1969. He established a blood bank, updated anaesthetic procedures, taught family planning and supervised the training of many local and expatriate doctors and nurses. He was accompanied by his wife, Dorothy, and his children (Matthew, James, Susan, Tom, and Jocelyn). Dr Freeman later published a memoir of this period, Doctor in Vanuatu (2006).
His collection on Open Research currently consists of slides from Freeman’s time in the New Hebrides (1963-1968) and Papua New Guinea (1963). Further records from Freeman’s collection can be found at ANUA 602 at the Australian National University Archives.
