Item type: Item , Access status: Open Access , The Idea of National Security: What Use is it to Policymakers?(National Security College, The Australian National University, 2012-04) White, HughOver the past decade or more many governments, especially western governments, have taken steps to draw together a wide range of different functions, objectives and institutions under the concept of ‘national security’. This trend is driven by two simple ideas. First, countries and their citizens face many different types of security threats, and they all need to be taken seriously and given due attention and priority. Second, government has many different types of policy instruments that can be used to manage this range of security threats, and they can and should all be used in the most cost-effective combination to address the full range of security challenges. From these two ideas naturally springs a third: that governments should view the security threats they face, and the responses they make to them, holistically, and unite them under an overarching National Security Strategy. We might call these three ideas collectively ‘the idea of national security’.Item type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Embracing Difference: Governance of Critical Technologies in the Indo-Pacific(National Security College, Australian National University, 2021-02) Ford, Jolyon; Clifford, Damian; Mansted, Katherine; Medcalf, RoryItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Building Cooperation: Cyber, Critical Technology and National Security(National Security College, Australian National University, 2021-02) Takahashi, Kohei; Ide, Tatsuo; Takahashi, Ikuo; Tokito, Kazuo; Sasaki, Takahiro; Mansted, Katherine; Medcalf, Rory; Michishita, Narushige; Takahashi, KoheiItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , The Domestic Security Greyzone: Navigating the Space Between Foreign Influence and Foreign Interference(National Security College, Australian National University, 2021-02) Mansted, Katherine; Mansted, KatherineItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Networked: Techno-democratic Statecraft for Australia and the Quad(National Security College, Australian National University, 2021-02) Rasser, Martijn; Mansted, Katherine; Medcalf, RoryItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , The Digital Indo-Pacific: Regional Connectivity and Resilience(National Security College, Australian National University, 2021-02) Ray, Trisha; Jain, Sangeet; Jayakumar, Arjun; Reddy, Anurag; Mansted, Katherine; Medcalf, RoryItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , National Mobilisation During War: Past Insights, Future Possibilities(National Security College, Australian National University, 2020-08) Layton, Peter; Mansted, KatherineItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , The Strategic Implications of Manipulative Digital Platforms: A Trust-Driven Approach(National Security College, Australian National University, 2020-10) Rogers, Zac; Mansted, KatherineItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Navigating Uncertainty: The Future of Futures Analysis in the Australian Public Service(National Security College, Australian National University, 2020-06) Wilson, Lachlan; Young, Ryan; Kapetas, Anastasia; Mansted, KatherineItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , A 2020 Vision for Five Eyes: New Structures for New Challenges(National Security College, Australian National University, 2020-12) Stoltz, William A.; Mansted, KatherineItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Diversifying Air Power: Broadening Air Force's value proposition in an age of high contest(National Security College, Australian National University, 2020-05) Hunter, Peter; Mansted, KatherineItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , The citizen as enemy combatant: dealing with foreign terrorist fighters(National Security College, Australian National University, 2019-05) Carroll, Jacinta; Medcalf, RoryItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , China 2030: Power in a Disrupted World(National Security College, Australian National University, 2020-05) Young, Ryan; Young, RyanItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Activating People Power to Counter Foreign Interference and Coercion(National Security College, Australian National University, 2019-12) Mansted, Katherine; Mansted, KatherineItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Defining thresholds in law - sophisticated decryption and law enforcement(National Security College, Australian National University, 2018-04) Mosey, Michelle; Henschke, Adam; Medcalf, RoryItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Addressing Australia's vulnerability to weaponised narratives(National Security College, Australian National University, 2018-06) Zappone, Chris; Sussex, Matthew; Medcalf, RoryItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , From secrecy to agency: Trust and policy implications of shifting public attitudes to privacy(National Security College, Australian National University, 2019-01) Henschke, Adam; Young, Ryan; Gould, Maia; Smith, Hannah; Medcalf, RoryItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Trusted, ethical, fast-moving and effective future police(National Security College, Australian National University, 2019-05) Young, Ryan; Meli, Odette; Medcalf, RoryItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , Marawi and after: how Australia can help(National Security College, Australian National University, 2017-08) Blaxland, John; Carroll, Jacinta; Carr, Andrew; Harris, Marty; Medcalf, RoryItem type: Item , Access status: Open Access , The threat to the global economic and financial order: protecting Australia's interests(National Security College, Australian National University, 2017-08) Luckham, Bruce; Medcalf, Rory
