Cultural advice

The Australian National University acknowledges, celebrates and pays our respects to the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people of the Canberra region and to all First Nations Australians on whose traditional lands we meet and work, and whose cultures are among the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that ANU Library collections may include images, names, voices, and other representations of deceased persons.

Material in the collection may contain terms, language or views that reflect the period in which the item was created and may be considered inappropriate today.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this film recording may contain images, voices and names of people who are deceased. -- Banumbirr is a term used by the Yolngu people of the Northern Arnhem Land. It refers to the concepts, objects, cycles and ceremonies that relate to the morning star (Venus) and its relationship to creator ancestors and ancestral beings. Early in 2002 a group of Yolngu artists and dancers donated their sacred Morning Star Poles to an exhibit at the National Maritime Museum. This film documents the launch of this exhibit and the ceremonial dance that was performed. -- Commissioned by Bandigan Aboriginal Art and Craft.
