Small Pacific island states: development of international trade

Abstract

This article provides an assessment of a range of issues concerned with the development of international trade for small Commonwealth states in the South Pacific region. The irony for the South Pacific small states is that the worldwide push for a more liberal international trade environment is almost certainly detrimental to their trading prospects, certainly in the short to medium term. With tariff barriers declining throughout the world, current trading advantages enjoyed by the Pacific island nations under SPARTECA and Lom? will dissipate.
