Abstract

Many Australians are familiar with the Mataranka region through Jeannie Gunn's We of the Never-Never, written about Elsey Station in 1902. (Map 1) Gunn's story of adventurous pioneering days in the pastoral industry and her own happy association with the Elsey, is one telling of courage, vitality and humour in the face of hardship and isolation in the harsh outback.
