Abstract

When electrons drift and diffuse through a gas under the influence of an electric field, the energy received from the field by the electrons is transferred to the gas through the elastic and in elastic collisions which occur. The cross sections for these processes can be deduced from accurate values of the electron drift velocity, W, and of the ratio of diffusion coefficient to mobility, D/μ.
