Abstract

Suddenly in the eighties the choices to be made in foreign and defence policies seem harder. This book is an examination of the areas in which Australian governments, of whatever party, will have to make decisions. It does not aim to tell governments what to do, but provides a guide to the problems which may help politicians to choose and the general reader to judge their choices. Some of the problems analysed are those of the central balance of power - and Australia's relations with the United States and the Soviet Union - nuclear policy, Antarctica, China and Japan, the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean littoral.
