Cultural advice

The Australian National University acknowledges, celebrates and pays our respects to the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people of the Canberra region and to all First Nations Australians on whose traditional lands we meet and work, and whose cultures are among the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that ANU Library collections may include images, names, voices, and other representations of deceased persons.

Material in the collection may contain terms, language or views that reflect the period in which the item was created and may be considered inappropriate today.

The past few years has seen the emergence of a critical assessment of the relationship between the ethnographer and the society being studied (for example see Agar 1984; Marcus and Fisher 1986). One result has been the recognition that '..ethnographies are a function of the different traditions of ethnographer, group, and intended audience" (Agar 1984: 783). I believe it appropriate to include here a summary of the traditions, influences and chance events that led me to ethno-archaeology and shaped the methodology I used.en_AU
