Abstract

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this video recording contains images, voices and names of people who are deceased. -- A leading Aboriginal activist in the civil liberties movement of the 1960s, Kath Walker (who changed her name to Oodgeroo Noonuccal) became best known as a writer, poet and educator. She is recognised as the first successful writer of Aboriginal descent. Her touching portrayal of the plight of her people ruffled the Australian conscience; her poetry helped bridge the gap between two races by educating non-Aboriginal Australians and inspiring Aboriginal people.
