Abstract

Between 1925 and 1957, thirteen Australian films were produced that were made or set in the Pacific. Through films such as Ken Hall's Lovers and Luggers, Frank Hurley's Hound of the Deep and Lee Robinson's King of the Coral Sea, J ane Landman explores Australia's cinematic engagement with the Torres Strait, Papua and New Guinea and the ways in which this interacts with Australians' responsibilities for, and requirements of colonial government, including issues of defence, exploitation of resources and national self, realisation.
