dc.description.abstractThe large-scale migration of Chinese to Australia in the nineteenth century has had a significant influence on the political and ethnic structure of Australian society. The reaction to their immigration is institutionalized in the White Australia policy or, as it is officially termed, the policy of restrictive immigration, a policy sometimes described as a 'settled issue of Australian politics'. The essential feature of this policy is the refusal to allow non-European immigration to Australia.en_AU
