Abstract

In discussing the topic "Location and Areal spread of the rice industry in North Queensland”, the emphasis has been on determining the reasons for the success of the industry, and factors that have influenced its location and spread. Chapter one deals in considerable detail, with * historical background to the various attempts of establishing a rice industry in Queensland, and examines the early trial work at the Bureau of Tropical Agriculture, South Johnstone. The establishment of Killaroo Research Station and the subsequent rice trials, leading to the present successful rice industry are discussed in detail. In the following chapters factors influencing the location and spread of the industry are discussed in considerable detail. Considerable importance has been placed on maps to illustrate in detail, the actual location of the areas where rice has been grown since the industry commenced in the Lower Burdekin. A series of map^ for each area illustrates clearly the increase or decrease of rice growing in the particular area.
