Abstract

An examination o-f seed bank populations o-f North Keppel Island and other areas on the Capricorn Coast <by germination study) -found that grassland areas on North Keppel Island showed similarities in both composition and density and other grassland areas on Blu-f-f Point and Humpy Island. Island grasslands which had a history o-f intensive grazing possessed higher seed bank densities <370 - 1186 S6eeds/ m2) when compared with Blu-f-f Point grassland with no grazing history <140 S6eeds/2) # Both vegetation and seed banks o-f North Keppel Island possessed a number of exotic and ruderal species, a consequence o-f intensive grazing pressure. Intensive grazing by up to 1000 -feral goats, sheep and cattle over one hundred years may negate the time lapsed since eradication o-f goats and cattle a number o-f years ago.
