"On 14 August [1900] at 3 pm, British Rajputs and Sikhs crawled through the Water Gate under the Tartar City wall on the southern defence perimeter of the legations, and the central gates of the quarter were flung open to receive the rescuing British troops....... in fifty-five days, sixty-six people had been killed, and a hundred and fifty wounded [not counting the Chinese Christians who had fought alongside the Europeans]" Marina Warner (1972) p.244.
