Abstract

This thesis details the projects I undertook during my placement as a Master of Applied Epidemiology scholar with the Health Protection Unit, Hunter New England Health, from February 2017 to August 2019. My projects included an investigation into an outbreak of norovirus at a large health function, an epidemiological study into the risk of transmission of Chlamydia psittaci from horses to humans, an analysis of variables associated with healthcare-seeking behaviour in Flutracking participants and an evaluation of the National Enhanced Listeriosis Surveillance System. This thesis also reports on teaching activities I was involved in during my placement including my 'Lesson from the field' on investigation of cancer clusters and my involvement in conducting outbreak workshops for University of Newcastle medical students and health protection staff at the Tamworth office.
