Abstract
This book is about Police Motu, one of the largest and most important languages in the history of Papua New Guinea. It is the story of how and why this language came into being, of how and why it came to be known as Police Motu, and how and why it spread and developed to become one of two unofficial national languages of modern Papua New Guinea. Today this language is known officially as Hiri Motu but as most of this book is about the history of the language up until its name was changed in the early 1970s the old
name is used in the title of this volume. The subtitle iena sivarai (lit. its story) is the Police Motu and Hiri Motu for 'its history' .
