Fair trade currently offers limited opportunities to smallholder coffee growers. PNG growers are at a particular disadvantage in accessing this market. While the fair trade market remains small, with high barriers to entry, for participating growers, the key benefits include the offer of a minimum price and a premium for local development, as well as collective marketing. There is a need to focus on whether one of these key features of fair trade - a collective marketing strategy - offers a more accessible and beneficial possibility for Papua New Guinea's smallholder coffee growers currently excluded from fair trade markets.en_AU
