Abstract

The longest bridge in the Territory, 1,690 feet long, spans the Markham River near the Huon Gulf port of Lae. Completed in 1955, it has made possible the passage of heavy motor transport between Lae and the gold and timber producing area of Wau and Bulolo. A difficult and sometimes turbulent river, The Markham often changes its course. The Administration spent £300,000 on building this bridge, strengthening the river banks, and providing access roads not easily damaged by flooding. The total Territory expenditure on capital works and services in 1959-60 was £3,927,668.
