Early in the morning of September 1 1983 Korean Airlines commercial flight 007 (KAL 007) was destroyed by Soviet military aircraft in the vicinity of Sakhalin Island USSR en route from Anchorage to Seoul whilst passing without permission through Soviet airspace.
