Abstract

Description

Photograph occurs in album along with others of the Seige of Peking, June-August 1900. Photograph on left depicts a bathroom and the one on the right, a bedroom."The Hotel de Pekin was situated between the Japanese and French Legations, and consequently was in the front lines during the seige. The Swiss proprietor, Auguste Chamot and his American wife played a gallant part in the siege, defending the perimeter, rescuing people cut off by the Boxers, and organizing provisions for the besieged."
