The papers in this volume were first presented at a conference held in Darwin late in 1983 under the auspices of the North Australia Research Unit. The title of the conference, Economy and People in the North, was chosen in the hope that a wide range of topics connected with northern development would be dealt with together. With the help of speakers from the departments of the Northern Territory Government and from other universities, the aim was achieved.en_AU
