Pressure group activities of the Returned Servicemen's League
Abstract
The Returned Sailors 'Soldiers' and Airmen's Imperial
League of Australia , commonly known by its official short titles
as the Returned Servicemen ' s League , or R.S. L. , has been an active
pressure group since its establishment in 1916 . The organization
has performed other functions as well , providing social amenities
f or its members and administering welfare with regard to ex- servicemen
and their dependants. However , the main reason for the formation
of an Australia- wide body by separate state-based associations lay in
a desire t o improve the means by which political pressure could be
exerted. This has remained the main justificiation for having a
federal organization .
