Yevgenii Shvarts and his drama, studied against the background of Soviet literature 1929-1975

Abstract

Yevgenii L'vovich Shvarts was a doctor's son, born in southern Russia in 1896. During the First World War, the Revolution and the subsequent Civil War he was a student, first in Moscow and then in Rostov-na-Donu, where he joined an amateur theatre troupe and in 1921 went with them to Leningrad (then Petrograd), where the troupe soon broke up and dispersed. Shvarts himself, although not yet a writer, soon became a very welcome addition to the writers' community of the House of the Arts and a friend of literary groups such as the 'Serapion Brothers' and the 'Oberiu', who appreciated his ability with words.
