Abstract

This is a study of the participation by Melanesians in the cash economy. The Tasimboko of the northern plain of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands have been subjected to many and varied influence s from the exter nal world. Discovery and c ontact were followed by recruitment of labour for work in Australia and Fiji on sugar plantations, and by trade in copra and other products. Land alienation began late in the nineteenth century, and this was followed about the turn of the century by the establishment of plantations and permanent trading stations. Local wage employment t hus became available just ahead of the cessation of recruitment for Queens land in 1904 and Fiji in 1912.
