Beyond the Frame:Painted Pattern in Extended Pictorial Space

Abstract

This practice-led project investigates ways of extending pictorial space beyond the rectilinear frame of conventional painting. Releasing the painting from the confines of this support raises the question of where the painting begins and ends. This exploration took the form of a series of site-responsive installations of two and three-dimensional paintings based on patterns from Islamic textiles, tiles and quilts and, on observations of pattern in architecture. Different approaches to the edge of pictorial space were explored in a series of works that tested the use of colour, motif and interval, positive and negative space, human scale and pattern variation. The material qualities of paint and paper, modular format and textiles were employed to investigate the research question and to open new modes of process and pictorial expression. Show more
