The Malahang Industrial Centre and the development of industrial centres in Papua New Guinea

Abstract

This survey of the Malahang Industrial Centre sheds light on further development of industrial centres in Papua New Guinea. The Malahang Industrial Centre led to an improved business environment with better security conditions, subsidised rent, reliable power, water and communications, but the increase in employment came at a high cost and the increase in manufacturing activity was disappointing. A one-stop shop did not develop. The Industrial Centres Development Corporation was placed into the situation of a government-owned construction company. Marketing was poor. And the general investment climate in Papua New Guinea continued to influence investment decisions. The proposal to privatise the Corporation could change the outcomes but for the moment the impact of the industrial centres is at best limited. Show more
