dc.description.abstractThe focus of my PhD research is to examine a number of scientific visualisations of the natural world in order to consider and locate the specific spatial qualities of textile based visual practices. From a practice-led investigation using textile and drawing media, the research broadens the understanding of the spatiality of textile practice by demonstrating shared concerns with areas of science in which nature is described in the language of geometry. The research engages with the ideas of Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry through textile materials and processes. From this I have developed a body of practice-led research which highlights the role of textile epistemologies in understanding a number of key spatial concepts in science. The research locates the complex and specific nature of spatial relationships within textile practice as well as the field's contemporary relevance as an area of interdisciplinary academic enquiry.
