Description

Zhang Zhidong (张之洞 2/9/1837-4/10/1909) acted as governor-general of Hubei and Hunan between 1889 and 1907. He was responsible for the building of the Beijing-Hankou railway. On the death of Liu Kunyi in October 1902 he acted as governor-general at Nanjing after which he returned to Wuchang. Hummel (1943) v.I pp. 27-32. This photograph could depict his return from Nanjing. "Chang Chih-tung" was "Viceroy at Hankow". Diana Preston (1999), p. 256.Photographs occur in album near a similar photograph dated 1903 and depict what appears to be the same railway carriage.
