Abstract
The contemporary pastoral industry in Central Australia has a history of Aboriginal displacement and exploitation, yet has provided Aboriginal people with employment and a continued connection with the land. The industry currently faces economic problems within a restructuring national economy, and environmental problems as it confronts the unsustainability of its past practices and their impact upon a fragile arid environment
