dc.description.abstract... In this paper, I seek to make at least a tentative start in bringing the Southern European welfare state experience within the ambit of comparative social policy research. In the context of this conference, it seems appropriate to do this explicitly rather than implicitly; not by simply including these countries in an analysis of some particular aspect of social policy. but rather by asking whether the inclusion of these countries in our broad-gauge analysis of the development of social security modifies the conclusions of that analysis and whether it tells us anything interesting about the New Southern Europe...en_AU
