It has been the traditional role of education in all societies to pass on to the young both the knowledge and skills needed for adult ·life and the mores of behaviour of that society. Moral training has therefore always been a fundamental part of education. The evolution of the modern nation-state has raised a dilemma concerning this traditional role. Along with increasing secularization and a mass society, the modern nation has given birth to the modern, compulsory, and very largely state-run education system. Education systems ·are all faced with a controversial problem - what active role, if any, should the state play in the development of a child's morality?en_AU
